A Bhutan visa costs US$40 per person — a one-off, non-refundable application fee paid online before you travel. It is the smaller half of Bhutan's entry cost: the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per adult per night, guaranteed at this rate until 31 August 2027, makes up the rest.

A worked example: a couple on a 6-night trip pays 2 × $40 = $80 in visa fees and 2 × 6 × $100 = $1,200 in SDF — $1,280 in government fees before tour costs. Children aged 6–11 pay US$50 SDF per night, children under 6 pay nothing, and Indian nationals need a free permit rather than a visa, with an SDF of Nu. 1,200 per night.

How far in advance should I apply?

Apply at least 2 weeks before travel as processing takes about 5 working days. For festival periods, book 4-6 months in advance.

Unlike most countries, you cannot simply apply for a visa and pay later. Your visa is tied directly to your travel dates and the payment of a daily government fee.

• Step 1: Pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
  International tourists must pay an SDF based on age: $100/night for ages 12+, $50/night for ages 6-11, and free for children 5 and under. This fee supports Bhutan's free healthcare, education, and environmental conservation.

Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?
